What you'll learn

What You'll Learn

Self-paced learning lets you bring Dharma vocabulary into your Tibetan at whatever pace fits your life. These resources continue The Heart of Tibetan Language, Volume 3, designed by Franziska Oertle, and cover the same Lower Advanced ground as Advanced 301: the spread of Buddhism, the life of the Buddha, the Three Turnings of the Wheel, and the practice of refuge, alongside the grammar that carries you there. Whether you want the full set of resources or prefer to focus on webinars, you'll find clear explanations and practical tools to work with material that, for most of us, is the reason we started learning Tibetan in the first place.

By completing the Advanced self-paced package, you'll be able to:

A learner working with advanced Tibetan grammar

Use advanced grammar tools like temporal connectives and nominalizers

A Tibetan manual open on a desk

Understand and practice essential Dharma vocabulary in colloquial context

A learner reading from The Heart of Tibetan Language, Volume 3

Read and work with selections from The Heart of Tibetan Language, Volume 3

A learner reflecting on colloquial and classical grammar

Recognize where colloquial and classical grammar overlap and where they differ

Both packages follow The Heart of Tibetan Language, Volume 3, and cover the same ground: Lessons 21 through 25, the Lower Advanced level. The difference is how much support and practice you get along the way.

A note before you start

Important Note

These resources are supplements. They give you clear explanations and practice opportunities, but they don't replace live conversation or study groups. Tibetan grows best in community, so join a course, a small study circle, or work with a private tutor for real progress.

These packages don't include recordings of live classes, out of respect for the privacy of our students.

Who It's For

These resources are designed for students who have completed the Intermediate level and are ready to advance their Tibetan, focusing on the blend of Buddhist terminology and colloquial language needed to understand Dharma teachings.

They're especially valuable if you're preparing to join the Upper Advanced 302 live course, or if you simply want to deepen your practice through language, at your own pace.

Self-Paced Advanced FAQ

The questions we hear most, answered.

What's the difference between the Full Package and the Webinar Package?
Both cover the same ground, Lessons 21–25 of The Heart of Tibetan Language, Volume 3. The Full Package adds the tools to practice and track your progress: Anki and Memrise decks, Tibetan songs with translation, practice exercises, and digital speaking practice on Moodle. The Webinar Package gives you the webinar explanations alone, a lighter way to cover the same material.
Does this cover Advanced 302 as well?
No. Both packages cover Lower Advanced only, the same ground as our live Advanced 301 course. There's currently no self-paced package for Upper Advanced 302. If you're preparing for 302, this package is a useful step, not a replacement for it.
How much time should I plan each week?
There's no fixed pace. Some learners move through a lesson a week, others take longer. The Full Package includes more material to work through than the Webinar Package, so plan accordingly.
Do I need to have completed Intermediate first?
Yes, these resources build on the Intermediate level.
Is there a discount for monastics?
Yes. Monastics pay $108 for the Full Package and $75 for the Webinar Package.
Are live class recordings included?
No. Out of respect for the privacy of our students, these packages don't include recordings of live classes.
Can I combine this with a live course?
Yes. Many learners use these resources to prepare for the Upper Advanced 302 live course, or alongside lessons they're already taking elsewhere.
Which textbook do I need?
The Heart of Tibetan Language, Volume 3, plus the workbook, both available as eBooks on Google Play. Textbook and exercise book samples are also included with the Webinar Package.
